AIANTA Tourism Development Internship

Work with the premier American Indian tourism association on the first tribal destination website! This interactive website is a tremendous tool for tribes to promote their destinations, attractions and events. Learn about what the tribes are sharing with visitors and help Indian tribes use cultural tourism as an economic benefit for their communities.

Internship Description
The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit association of tribes,  tribal businesses and entrepreneurs who strive to advance Indian Country tourism. AIANTA  serves as the voice and resource for its constituents in advancing tourism, assisting tribes in creating infrastructure and capacity, provide technical assistance, training and educational resources to tribes, tribal organizations and entrepreneurs.

AIANTA has part-time internship opportunities available for students able to telecommute/work remotely with our team members based in Albuquerque and Washington, D.C. The internship program provides an opportunity to work in a communications role to contribute to AIANTA’s new landmark destination website,

Under the supervision of the website’s co-manager, the intern will reach out to tribes and native tourism organizations to provide information about the website, facilitate registration, author content, and engage followers on social media platforms. Interns can expect to have their work published online. In addition to job-training, AIANTA will provide tourism and destination development training sessions and give the intern experience with working with some of the 500+ sovereign nations that comprise Indian Country.

Conducts outreach to tribes and tribal tourism organizations about

Provides information about to potential AIANTA partners

Writes Travel Experiences related to the partner listings acquired

Generates social media postings on platforms

Tracks all contacts and correspondence activities in Salesforce in a timely fashion

Attends and actively participates in team and individual calls and training seminars

Commitment and Compensation
Interns must dedicate a minimum of 15 hours per week for at least eight weeks.  The summer internship period starts June 1st and ends August 15th. Working hours during the week are flexible.  Internships are unpaid, however, interns:

- Earn incentive-based reward

- Are eligible for AIANTA’s Tourism and Hospitality Scholarship

- Receive tourism training

- Acquire AIANTA membership for two years

- Obtain course credit through their academic institutions, if applicable.

American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian descent

Currently enrolled in a college or university within the U.S. and have completed at least two semesters at time of application

GPA 3.0 or above (most recent transcript required)

Proficient in Word, PowerPoint and social media and will have consistent phone, computer and internet access (at own expense) during internship

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Career interest in tourism, hospitality, recreation, communications or related field
