Elders’ Services and Activities Coordinator

Works under the direction of the Family Services Director. Works closely with the Elders to identify areas of interest for social, educational, and cultural activities. Plans and implements social, lifelong learning, health improvement services and activities. Also coordinates cultural activities, regular local activities and, a schedule of daily on-site activities. Listens to Elders to see what services are needed and connect as needed. Position will require frequent schedule adjustments requiring alternate workday hours or work week days.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned.
Attend Elders Committee meetings and collect information and interests related to social, educational and cultural activities for elders. Provides at least one health prevention type presentation on a monthly basis. Develops activities based on the needs, wants and desires of the Elders.
Plan, coordinates, and implements weekly, monthly, and annual activities ensuring that all eligible individuals are notified in advance and given fair opportunity to participate.
Develop and maintain an Elders’ Calendar of Events for a six-month period, regularly updating the calendar. This calendar will include daily on-site activities and monthly off-site activities. Make sure all activities are planned and implemented with Elders’ safety put first. Ensure that all off-site activities are accessible to Elders with limited mobility issues, including but not limited to wheelchair accommodations, elevators, and seat selections, etc.
Plan and conduct activities in a fiscally responsible manner, including advance requisition of funds, following all Tribal and Elders, Inc. reconciliation procedures. Work with the FS Office Manager to review budgets and develop budgets for supplies needed for Elder activities.
Review and comply with appropriate departmental policies and procedures
Find and advocate for services. Work closely with SIT Departments and public agencies to know what services are available to Elders, e.g. State & Veterans Caregiver Services, Social Security, Housing, Accessing Elder home repair funds, TANF, food bank or vouchers, etc.
Meet with homebound elders to complete Needs Assessment forms for AoA meal delivery program. Also meet with elders to complete evaluation needs to assure the need for referrals are appropriately documented.
Assist with navigating through systems, conflicts, and challenges in an empathetic and respectful manner as needed.
Develop and maintain a current listing of all Squaxin Elders and their spouses, and all eligible tribal Elders, including birthdates, addresses, phone numbers, emails and emergency contact information, to be used explicitly for job related contacts.
Prepare information, updates and articles for an Elders’ Newsletter, Klah-Che-Min, Daily Scoop and Elders’ hot line. Prepare mail-outs for Elders so they are actively informed of activities well in advance to encourage fair opportunity for participation.
Work closely with Elders on large fundraising events and activities such as the OysterFest Salmon Bake and the bi- annual Elders’ Host Luncheon, which will require long and intensive work hours. Request and coordinate volunteers to assist Elders with activities including fundraising events.
Maintain files that include information about the activity, names of participants and amount of funds used for event/activity.
Maintain a high level of professionalism when representing the Elders program
Attend trainings as required.
Work with Elders Inc. Committee to book and organize out-of-area activities and trips.
Transport or coordinate transportation for Elders to activities off reservation, including the casino.
Maintain accurate records of lunch receipts, transports and any other correspondence for the purpose of completing the annual AoA Report.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
AA Degree with 2 years relevant experience serving an elderly population OR HS diploma/GED and 4 years of relevant experience serving an elderly population. Must be able to work well with Elders, address and communicate with Elders in a patient and respectful manner; display an openness to listen to ideas and interests of elders; and be knowledgeable regarding challenges and/or barriers specific to Elders.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before small groups or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common factions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to type a minimum of 30 words per minute and have excellent computer skills and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATE, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have a valid Washington Driver’s License and proof of insurance. Able and willing to drive a large passenger van. Must have and maintain a Food Handlers Permit and a First Aid Certificate, or obtain these within 30 days of hire. Must successfully pass a WATCH and Tribal Court background check.
