Under the direction of the Garden Field Technician Lead, this position assists with growing, harvesting, processing, and distributing vegetables, fruits, and herbs produced during the growing season at the Squaxin Island Community Garden. This position is a seasonal position with hours that may flucuate from half time to full time depending on the season. Weekend hours may be required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned
Carry out day-to-day agricultural operations, including irrigation, greenhouse operations, pest and disease management, field cultivation, planting, weeding, and fertilizing;
Assist with harvest and post-harvest handling and distribution for row crops, herbs, berries, medicinal plants, and orchards;
Participate in garden outreach programs, such as youth activities, classes, events, and workshops;
Operate program equipment including hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment;
Assist in maintaining safe, functional, and clean garden storage spaces;
Assist in the preparation for garden events, classes, workshops, which include; the setup and breakdown of tables, chairs, tents, and decorations; and
Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma/GED and 1 year of experience OR 3 year’s relevant experience. Must also have the ability to operate heavy equipment, such as: augers, mowers, rototiller, chainsaws, blowers, drills, wood chipper, rental equipment, lime or fertilizer spreaders, brush mower, weed whacker; some experience in tree pruning is preferred.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common factions, and decimals.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds including shoveling, turning, using wheelbarrow with heavy loads, squatting, and climbing ladders.
Special vision requirements for this position are close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to warm, wet and/or humid conditions (non-weather and weather), and work near moving mechanical parts or be at risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
