This position will be responsible for learning and maintaining the wastewater and water operations of the Squaxin Island Tribe. An individual development plan including on the job training and technical training will be developed which will enable the incumbent to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
This position shall be qualified for the Squaxin Utilities Operator Progression Program for career development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Other duties may be assigned)
• Monitor, test, adjust and maintain wastewater treatment system.
• Learn and keep water systems functioning.
• Make daily checks to ensure the operation of the water and sewer systems.
• Clean lift stations, clean and unplug screens, and keep pumps in good running order.
• Take water and sewer daily records and record run/start and stop times.
• Report any unsafe conditions that may be encountered.
• Collect water or sewer samples for analyzing.
• Perform wash down of basins and head works chambers on a regular basis.
• Maintain building and grounds surrounding water and sewer treatment plants.
• Must be willing to attend and follow through with training requirements related to this position.
• Must be able to work an alternative schedule occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED and three years of general work experience OR 5 years of general work experience.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customer or employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have a current Washington State Driver’s License. Must attend training and obtain water and/or wastewater certificates of competency.
While performing the duties of this position the employee will regularly be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel reach with hands and arms, and lift 10-25 pounds. The employee will frequently be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee will occasionally be required to taste and smell, and lift 50-100 pounds.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing this job the employee will regularly be exposed to the vibration of work equipment. The employee will frequently work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee will occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work in high precarious places, be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat (non-weather) and risk of electrical shock. The noise level for this position is generally loud.
