Inclement Weather Operations – Transit

The safety and well-being of our community members are of the utmost importance to Squaxin Island Tribe.

Transit:  During adverse weather conditions, Squaxin Island Transit will at a minimum follow the lead from Mason Transit Authority regarding levels of service. Due to the rural area that we cover, we may run an alternate schedule or shut down service when Mason County Transportation is running minimum routes. While every weather event is different, Squaxin Transit will follow these general guidelines:

General Guidelines During Severe Weather

  • Routes may be reduced or canceled with minimal notice.
Please always have a backup plan for return transportation.
  • Drivers have full authority to stop service if conditions become unsafe.
  • If the Shelton School District is operating on late start or is fully closed due to weather, Squaxin Transit may limit service areas or run an adjusted schedule.
  • If Squaxin Transit must close during the service day, we will:
    – Update the Scheduling Line voicemail: (360) 490‑0567
    – Notify partner agencies (MTA, Grays Harbor, Griffin School, and Child Development Center)
    – Post updates on Facebook and the Squaxin Transit webpage
  • To confirm active service, call our Scheduling Line at (360) 490‑0567
Drivers will update the outgoing message as conditions change.
  • For Mason Transit Authority updates, please check MTA’s Rider Alerts at: www.masontransit.org

Important Reminder

Although we will do our best to get you where you need to go, weather can worsen quickly.
You may reach your destination but may not be able to get back if conditions deteriorate.

Please make a backup transportation plan anytime severe weather is forecasted.
